Apple Gets ‘Butt-hurt’: Gay Sex in Comics

SAGA

Apple tablet owners whom purchase Saga via Comixology may get a little pissed tomorrow because tomorrow’s issue is banned from viewing on the iOS devices! Why? Because it might offend those of us who aren’t quite comfortable with the act of homosexual fellatio. The (seriously small) images in violation of the Apple’s high standards of morality and taste can be seen by following this link and also this link, thanks to Comic Book Resources nifty preview feature.

Saga has never shied away from the ‘dark side of the moon’– having featured a plethora of childbirth, gruesome death, and even heterosexual intercourse (GASP!!) . [Not so] Surprisingly, considering the aforementioned material this is the first wall they’ve hit with Apple’s censors, but not the first which Apple has challenged. Apparently the company has always been strict on sexual content in the past… yeah right.

Remember when this was controversial?– Anyone?

Here’s a dare: Go to iTunes and search ‘sex’. They have tutorials, Penthouse subscriptions, joke apps, explicit songs. Whether the sex is gay or straight it’s equally as personal and sensitive. Culturally we need to get the sticks out of our collective asses and just deal with the idea of two consenting males boning– because it happens. Personally I don’t want to see ANYONE having sex in most cases, because it tends to be used as a cheap marketing ploy. But it’s part of the media and I deal with it as long as children aren’t exposed to the same content. When society reaches the point where people are collectively more comfortable with sexualizing teenage girls than two adult men, there’s a problem. I personally challenge Apple Inc. to apply the same morality based standards to the music lyrics they sell– for astounding profits one might add.

You kissed a girl and you liked it?– Banned!

The series’ writer, Brian Vaughan, has released a statement on the matter on the Tumblr page for Saga publisher Image Comics:

As has hopefully been clear from the first page of our first issue, SAGA is a series for the proverbial “mature reader.” Unfortunately, because of two postage stamp-sized images of gay sex, Apple is banning tomorrow’s SAGA #12 from being sold through any iOS apps. This is a drag, especially because our book has featured what I would consider much more graphic imagery in the past, but there you go. Fiona and I could always edit the images in question, but everything we put into the book is there to advance our story, not (just) to shock or titillate, so we’re not changing shit.

Apologies to everyone who reads our series on iPads or iPhones, but here are your alternatives for Wednesday:

1) Head over to you friendly neighborhood comics shop and pick up a physical copy of our issue that you can have and hold forever.

2) While you’re at it, don’t forget to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which helps protect retailers who are brave enough to carry work that some in their communities might consider offensive. You can find signed copies of Saga at the CBLDF site right now.

3) Download the issue directly through sites likehttps://comics.imagecomics.com/https://comics.imagecomics.com or on your non-Apple smartphone or tablet.

4) If all else fails, you might be able to find SAGA #12 in Apple’s iBookstore, which apparently sometimes allows more adult material to be sold than through its apps. Crazy, right?

Anyway, special thanks to Eric Stephenson and everyone at Image for supporting our decision, and for always being so supportive of creators. Sorry again to readers for the inconvenience, but I hope everyone will be able to find an issue that Fiona and I are particularly proud of. And after you do, please check outPanelSyndicate.com, the new digital comics site I own with artist Marcos Martin, which remains 100% uncensored by corporate overlords.

Your pal,
Brian

As adult readers, we have the right to not only speak freely but to freely read what we like. It’s ludicrous that Apple finds a need to censor an adult eComic while allowing you to purchase porn without a problem. Just like you know what you’re going to get from a recording artist you enjoy who frequently sings or raps about mature content, a patron of the successful Saga series knows what to anticipate.
