Shusei Yoshida declares Sony did NOT consider an always-on PS4

I have voiced concerns in the past (and I still do) on the “always on” subject and Sony´s President of Worldwide Studios Shusei Yoshida made a statement to Game Informer that basically sums up part of my own views on the matter:

“Did we consider it? No, we didn’t consider it. The main reason being that many countries don’t have robust Internet Connection. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw [that] do not really have robust Internet.”

Well it is good to know someone has their head in the right place! Yoshida previously confirmed an offline mode when talking about the PS4’s social and sharing features:

“Oh yes, yes you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social. So if you don’t want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.”

Now the ball is on Microsoft’s court, will they choose to go online only and alienate thousands of fans? Or will they go the safest and most logical route of NOT implementing  an always online requirement? In May 21st we’ll know, until then we can relax and at least know Sony won’t be shoving measures like that down our throat…
