Fans of Nintendo know that Animal Crossing is a huge IP for the company, and the numbers do not lie! Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s first week of sales set a record for the company after its first day release in mid-June and sales are still rising. In Japan alone, the title had sold more than 4 million copies digitally. The release also lead to a 400% boost in 3DS sales from the previous week. Showing that the title holds the capability to move stagnated hardware, practically selling itself!
Nintendo referred to this phenomenon as further proof that the fan base of Nintendo games value the longevity and replay value of an IP above all. Fils-Aime made a few bold statements during the June 13, interview going so far as to say that the quality of their games is what holds them at the winning end of the console wars. As an intelligent but snark remark to the roar that Sony came out on top after their E3 media briefing.
