Unlike what you may think due to the title of the article, this isn’t about chocolate, but rather the red planet, Mars.
In this episode of The Road to Greenlight we will be looking at Lacuna Passage, a game where you play Jessica Rainer, the only survivor of the crashed Heracles mission and you must investigate the disappearance of the first manned mission to Mars.
The game is currently under development at Random Seed Games and had a successful kickstarter campaign recently, managing to garner 54,259$ from over 1800 backers. Despite being an exploration based game, you’ll also have to survive in the red, inhospitable planet. Your heart rate, caloric intake and oxygen levels are some of the things you’ll need to keep an eye on if you wish to persevere.
According to the developer, the game will feature a “hauntingly beautiful dynamic soundtrack” and encourage non linear gameplay. The game’s terrain is said to be generated from actual Mars satellite data and will consist of 25 square miles to freely explore even though you’re warned not to explore blindly as you might run out of food, water or oxygen.
Dear Esther and 2001: A Space Odyssey were mentioned by the developers as inspiration for their game, suggesting that you’ll have a big mystery to unravel while you explore the lonely but beautiful game world…
The game is set to come out in Q4 2014 which is more than a year from now, giving it enough time to grow and become a solid experience. There isn’t much more information on the game as of know and you can check the game’s Greenlight page here if you want to vote for its approval.
